COFFINS – “March Of Despair” EP

CoffinsDon’t you sometimes wish that somewhere out there, maybe even in Japan, there’s a band that sound like the best bits of Autopsy, Asphyx, Celtic Frost & Obituary ?

Well brothers I’ve found that very band in Coffins.

I’ve been pretty obsessive about them since I picked up a battered copy of the “Buried Death” LP in a record exchange in Soho. Now they’re a particularly difficult band to be obsessive about as they put out dozens of splits & 7” on  Munkeespunk Records, and are pretty tough to track down……. Ok I made up the record label but you get my drift.

Anyway 2012 sees their first release on the brilliant Hammerheart Records, “March Of Despair”.

This is a 5 track EP with track 5 being a cover of Deaths “Corpsegrinder” (from the early Reign In Terror demo). Sonically it’s a natural progression from their last proper full length, “Buried Death” in 2008.

The music is raw, downtuned & dirty but well produced with a very upfront bass. They go from face rippingly fast to skull crushingly slow and doomy, always with a really heavy groove behind them. If you really love Autopsy, you’ll like these boys……… how can you go wrong with a guitarist named “Bungo”?
